This past weekend, 1Hood Media, Mikael Owunna Studios, The Redd Studio, and the Pittsburgh Pirates collaborated to celebrate local Black artists with Art as Liberation, an event held outside of PNC Park.

Pittsburgh-based Black advocacy platform 1Hood Media is poised to expand its programming through a five-year funding pledge from a New-York based arts foundation.

1Hood was one of 18 winning organizations out of 250 applicants seeking a share of the $100 million pledged by the Wallace Foundation to “foster equity and improvement in the arts.”

The city of Pittsburgh is a place with as many change-makers as it has bridges. What the following four have in common is the desire to make an impact in their city through media and broadcasting, art and literature and social change. Composed of people who are both Pittsburgh natives and new transplants, this short list of up-and-coming rising stars should make you wonder if they’ll appear on one of our power lists one day for something sensational.
